The mundu is deceptively simple: a single woven cloth, no stitches, no fastenings. The elegance is all in the wearing.
The Basic Wrap
- Hold the mundu behind you, border to your left, upper edge at the navel.
- Bring the right end across and tuck it firmly at the left waist.
- Bring the left end around, pleat once, and tuck at the centre — the border should fall in a clean vertical line.
The Half-Fold (Madakku)
For work or walking, lift the lower hem and tuck it at the waist. Practise the flick — Malayalis learn it before they learn to cycle.
Occasion Rules
Temple: full length, always. Weddings: full length with the zari border shown. Beach with friends: madakku, obviously.
