Choosing a Cotton Saree: Weight, Weave and Wear

Chendamangalam vs Kuthampully, thread counts and how to buy a cotton saree that earns its keep.

Choosing a Cotton Saree: Weight, Weave and Wear — PRINTARA Journal

The cotton saree is the workhorse of the Kerala wardrobe — office to temple to dinner without complaint. Choosing well is mostly about weave.

Know Your Clusters

Chendamangalam: famously fine counts and extra-weft borders; crisp finish that softens over months. Kuthampully: broader borders and beautiful colour work; slightly heavier drape. Balaramapuram: the finest unbleached cottons, often nearly translucent.

The Crush Test

Crush a corner in your fist for five seconds. Good handloom springs back with soft creases; heavily starched powerloom holds a hard crumple.

Colour Honesty

Azo-free natural dyes fade gracefully into softer versions of themselves. Chemical brights fade patchily. Ask — a good seller knows their dye house.
